Economy

Cattle and dairy products are the major animal products of New Mexico. In 2006, there were just over 850,000 housing units in New Mexico. Increasing 65,500 from the total number in 2000, which was only 780,579. This number represents the year 2000 represents a 23.5 percent from the total number of 632,058 in the year 1990. Of these houses, 575,163 homes are located in the urban area while the remaining 205,416 are in the rural. 

In 2000, the homeownership rate was 70 percent, while the housing unit in multi-unit structures was 15.3 percent. The average household size is 2.63 people. For the owned homes, apartments and condo units, the average household size is 2.74. The median value of occupied units is $108,800. The median price for vacant units is $87,500. As for the rented homes, apartments and condo units, the median household size is 2.37 and the median monthly rent asked for vacant units is $406.
