When my wife and I decided we were going to start looking for a home, a garage was the last thing on my mind. After all, I had lived in apartments for more than 17 years, and most of my life was spent in housing without a garage. It was on my wife’s mind, however, and at the time I couldn’t figure out why. Now, years later, I realize that not only was she right about a garage, but it’s possibly one of the most important features on my house.
Garages offer so many things one wouldn’t normally think of. Let’s start with a place to store your car and keep it out of the elements. This doesn’t sound like such a big deal until you have to get out early in the morning either during or after it’s been snowing or raining, and you realize you’re nice and dry and don’t have to clean your car off.
Next, storage. If your garage is wide enough, you can pretty much store all sorts of things in the garage without having to worry about a shed, and it’ll be protected both from the elements and people potentially taking your stuff. You can put your tools in there, along with any yard items. If you have a riding mower you can store that in your garage. Any other motorized equipment can be stored easily enough, and even bicycles. And one more important thing is storing your garbage in your garage. True, every once in awhile it might not smell good, but at least it’s protected from roaming animals and mischievous kids.
If you make sure your garage is large enough, you can do maintenance on your car inside your garage if the weather is bad. In the garage we ended up with, there are flourescent lights, a heater, and shelves left from the previous owner, who used to be a part time auto mechanic.
It can also be a great place for extra storage. We have a second refrigerator/freezer in our garage as well as extra shelving for items we’re not quite sure what to do with. We have stored drinks and food out there for parties, and if we’re gathering things up to deliver to the Rescue Mission the garage is always the first stopping grounds before we load it into something for delivery.
You can see how useful having a garage can be, and having extra space can definitely help. Of course, having the garage designed the way you’d like it to maximize the space wouldn’t hurt either. Here are a few garage builders in Utah that might be able to offer you some more information:
