Economy
Utah is a center of transportation, information technology, research, government services and mining as well as a major tourist destination for outdoor recreation. St. George, Utah was the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States from 2000-2005 with Utah being the sixth fastest growing state overall in 2006.
The state’s gross state product, according to Statemaster, reached up to $82,353,000,000 which is the 33rd in the United States. The median earning for female, full-time worker is $27,471 and for male, full-time worker is $40,317. The median family income is $52,286 while the median household income is the 17th in the country at $47,074.
According to the 2007 State New Economy Index, Utah is ranked the top state in the nation for Economic Dynamism as determined by the degree which state economies are knowledge-based, globalized, entrepreneurial, information technology-driven and innovation-based. Petroleum is the major industry in eastern Utah. In central Utah, coal production accounts for much in the mining industry.
Tourism is a major industry in Southern Utah, with its five national parks and mountain-biking places. Research, information technology developments are along the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo corridor. It is noted for its ski resorts which served as the host in the 2002 Winter Olympics.
