Real estate in San Antonio is a solid investment, even with today’s housing market woes. As one of the nation’s fastest and most consistent growing cities, you can expect to see a steady growth in new homes for sale and in commercial property opportunities. Currently there is a wide selection of single-family builders and master-planned communities in and around the area. There is also a strong demand for active-adult communities, that are age restricted, located just outside the city. For inner city living, there are dozens of new condominium projects and existing condos and townhouses to choose from. In addition, many builders have created private gated estates, where custom homes can be built.
General City Information
San Antonio, including its metropolitan area, is home to 1.9 million residents, and is the 29th largest city in the United States. As Texas’ second largest city, San Antonio is named after Saint Anthony of Padua and is commonly referred to as Alamo City. The San Antonio River valley was first inhabited by Native Americans, and then in 1691 it was visited by Spanish explorers and missionaries, who gave the city its name. In 1863 the Battle of the Alamo occurred, where 189 settlers (including many Mexican nationals) stood their ground and eventually lost their lives as they defended the old mission against some 4,000 Mexican troops for thirteen days.
Economy
There are several sectors that have a major influence on the economy, including: national defense, health care, financial services, and tourism. The South Texas Medical Center is a conglomerate of multiple hospitals, research centers, educational institutions, and clinics where over 27,000 people are employed. An estimated twenty million tourists visit the city each year. The city is also comprised of several military bases including Air Education and Training Command, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, the U.S. Air Force’s basic military training, and the U.S. Army’s medical command and training.
Universities, colleges, and higher learning institutions also make up an important factor of the economy.
