General City Information

Austin is made up of over 700,000 residents, also known as Austinites. The city is located in the heart of Texas, three hours south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, an hour north of San Antonio, and two and a half hours west of Houston. Few people outside of Texas realize that this is the state capital. The city offers residents, and visitors alike, a diverse living environment with strong Hispanic and Latin American influences and good old fashioned country-western flare. There is also a deep-rooted music history in Austin, and their unofficial slogan, “Live Music Capital of the World”, is very suiting considering the impact the city has had on the music scene during the 1970s through to today.

The city is simply a place where life slows down, and while you are there, you easily forget your worries. In summer months, the temperature reaches the mid-90s (Fahrenheit) and usually only drops to around 40 degrees (Fahrenheit) during winter months. Austin experiences 300 days of sunshine each year and endures a daily mean temperature of 85. The city is full of attractions, golf courses, performing arts, museums, outdoor recreational activities, and dining—with hundreds of restaurants from Tex-Mex and outdoor barbeque cookeries, to fine cuisine and everything in-between.

Economy

Austin, Texas has large technology and defense industry sectors. There are many very well-known nationally and internationally recognized technology firms with operations within the city. These companies—AMD, Apple, Cisco, Dell, eBay, Google, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Samsung, and Sun Microsystems; amongst many other highly recognized organizations such as the State of Texas, the University of Texas, and the Seton Healthcare Network make up the cities biggest employers.

Educational institutions are also an important aspect of Austin, Texas. The University of Texas at Austin is the University of Texas System’s main campus and is one of the nation’s largest universities. Other colleges and universities include Acton School of Business, Austin Community College, Austin Graduate School of Theology, Concordia University, Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Huston-Tillotson University.

Recreation

Lake Travis and the Mansfield Dam along with three manmade lakes—Lake Austin, Lake Walter E. Long, and Lady Bird Lake are bodies of water all located within city limits. Lake Walter E. Long is the only one of these lakes that is not located on the Colorado River and is commonly visited for fishing and boating purposes. Lake Travis is a great location for boating, watercrafts, fishing, camping, picnicking, and even scuba diving due to the water’s clarity. Lady Bird Lake is well-known for the bicycling and hiking trails that run alongside the banks. Fishing, row-boats, kayaks, canoes and non-motorized crafts are permitted on the lake. Lake Austin is a great fishing spot and is stocked regularly with Largemouth bass, Catfish, and Sunfish.
