4 Ideas To Help Keep Your House Cool

Ceiling Fane by Ashleigh290

It gets pretty hot in Texas in the summer, extremely hot in certain places. We know that sometimes we have multiple days in the 100′s at a time; insufferable. The cost of running air conditioning constantly can get pretty high. Therefore, we offer 4 tips that might help your home stay cooler to help with your air conditioning bills.

1. Ceiling fans. They don’t have to move all that much, but they help both spread air around and move hot air from one place to another if you have a room that’s extremely hot. Many models will allow the fan to be reversed, which means it can either push air around or pull air up and then spread it around. Either way, it can help.

2. Thick cloth shades or curtains. Not only will both of these block direct sunlight from coming into your house during the hottest parts of the day, but they won’t heat up and then spread that heat around as much as plastic shades or metal blinds would do. Adding a double layer would help even more.

3. By extension, keep the windows covered based on where the sun is during the day. Sure, we all love having sunlight come into our homes, but it can really make things hot, and it fights against your air conditioner. The most crucial time to deal with the sun is in the evening hours, as heat builds up during the day based on the positioning of the sun. So if you have a part of your house that faces west, close those windows at least by 3PM.

4. You’re still going to have to run your air conditioning, but if you cool your house during the night, when the sun isn’t blasting you, it’ll allow you to keep it lower during the day, and at night you don’t have to drop the temperature as much to quickly cool your home, even if the temperature stays in the 90′s during the night. Every little trick helps save on energy costs.
