According to Wikipedia, Houston is the largest city in Texas and is the fourth largest city in the United States. The city encompasses approximately 600 square miles; in 2006 Houston had an estimated population of 2.14 million. Nextag.com states that the median income of households in the city is $42,475 and the median family income is $53,368, approximately $8,500 more than the median family income in the United States.
Metropolitan Area
The metropolitan area is the sixth largest metropolitan area in the United States with an estimated population of 5.5 million. This area is known as the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown and is made up of 10 counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto and Waller. The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States and is located in Southeast Texas in the Gulf Coast region. During the years 1990 – 2000 this area grew by 950,000 people. The city is the economic and cultural center of the Houston Metropolitan area.
Economy
Houston’s economy greatly relies on the energy, technology, manufacturing, aeronautics, shipping and banking industries. Houston’s Port of Houston is a major part of the economy and was responsible for moving more than 200 million tons of cargo in 2006. Four major energy corporations; Shell Oil Company, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Chevron have headquarters or divisions in Houston. In addition, an astonishing 40 foreign governments and 20 international banks operate in the area. In 2006, Forbes Magazine gave the city the third position in the nation as “Best Places for Business and Careers”.
