General State Information
North Carolina was one of the first settled colonies and was the last state to succeed from the union in 1861.The state capital Raleigh has a population of 359,332 people which is about 25% of the total population of the state 9,061,032. In 6 years the state grew about 10% from the year 2000 to 2006. This exceeds the increase of the whole entire growth rate for the whole entire United States. In 1795, North Carolina opened the first public university in the United States, now known for its basketball the University of North Carolina. Today North Carolina has currently 16 public universities 6 private Universities one being Duke, and 58 community colleges.
Climate
The climate in North Carolina varies because of the different elevations in the state. There are three different geographic regions in the state. The coastal plains, fall line and mountain range give the state dramatic variation of highs and lows for the year. The low can reach 30 °F in December and in August the high for the year can reach about 90 °F.
Economy
The average income per person in the state is about $31,029 which in 2005 ranked 36th in the nation. The state as a whole makes about $375 gross state product (2006) the state’s top selling products include poultry, eggs, tobacco, hogs, milk, cattle, and soy beans to name a few.
