SAN DIEGO (June 1, 2011) – It’s time to start submitting nominations for the Building Industry Association’s Icon Awards, the annual celebration recognizing the best in the business of building in San Diego County.
Featuring all-new and expanded categories, the Call for Entries is available online at www.biasandiego.org/iconawards. Deadline is Aug. 5. There is no cost to enter. The event will be held Sept. 15 at The Prado’s Grand Ballroom at Balboa Park. Ticket sales will be announced soon, so save the date on your calendar now.
“Excellent craftsmanship and service are being provided everyday by our colleagues in the building industry, and now is our opportunity to shine a public spotlight on those achievements,” said BIA President and CEO Borre Winckel. “Our 700-plus member association is overflowing with talent. Let’s make sure we recognize it.”
The second annual Icon Awards Call for Entries comprises 26 categories in five general areas: Builder Awards, Trade Contractor Awards, Open Awards, Associate Awards, Product Design Awards, and Marketing, Advertising and PR Awards.
Nominations are invited from qualified candidates and companies who have distinguished themselves during the period of January 1, 2010 through August 5, 2011, with their contribution to creating quality new single family homes, multi-family residences for sale or rent, specialty and mixed use, office and retail commercial, and/or urban projects.
Redesigned this year to best represent BIA member companies, the categories apply to builders, contractors, landscapers, marketing/advertising firm, public relations agencies, interior designers and architects.
Categories also cover individuals within BIA member companies and include construction sales representatives, project managers, superintendents, sales professionals and managers, customer service representatives, engineers, environmental and utility consultants and builder associates like legal, financial, market research, title, escrow and insurance professionals.
New this year to the Icon Awards is the Rookie of the Year category, recognizing the achievements of an individual who has worked in the building industry fewer than five years and has accomplished exceptional achievements in his or her area of expertise.

The BIA’s Icon Awards recognize the best of the best in the building industry. Introduced in 2010, after the industry’s awards events were cancelled due to the economy in 2009, the Icon Awards replaced BIA’s BIG and SAM awards events. The BIA’s Building Resources Council had hosted the annual BIG Awards, and the Sales & Marketing Council had hosted the long-running SAM Awards. This year, several BIA councils and committees – BRC, SMC, SCC (Specialty Contractors Council) and YGEN are involved with the awards and represented on the 2011 Icon Awards committee.
