There are a number of ways to reduce your utility bill and with the current state of our economy, who couldn’t use that? Here are some easy “to-do” fixed that will help you to save energy and money.
If you have an old fridge or freezer in the basement that’s used only on occasion, try keeping it unplugged until you need it. The fact is older refrigerators consume twice as much energy as newer models. In fact, you could be wasting up to 75% of your energy due to consumption by electronics while they are off. You can cut this loss by connecting power strips that monitor for inactivity and kill the power.
For your heating and air conditioning needs, install a programmable thermostat. An Energy Star model can automatically adjust heating and cooling temperatures. This is done on a fluctuating schedule. You also want to be sure to keep AC filters and coils clean, as dirty filters reduce air flow and condenser coils lose a great deal of efficiency when dirty. To save up to 10% or more on your power consumption, the condenser coil should be cleaned every two years and filters must be changed each month.
Save money in the summer on AC costs with a ceiling fan. In the winter, a humidifier can help you to lower the thermostat a bit since humid air retains more heat than dry air.
About 15% of air coming in and out of your home comes through the chimney. When not using your fireplace, block it with a draft stopper. Use an inflatable model or make one by stuffing a garbage bag with fiberglass insulation.
It’s amazing how much energy you can save by going on the offensive with cracks. Use a silicone caulk around windows and doors. Also, identify trouble spots such as where a pipe, vent, or electrical cable comes through the siding.
Finally, because showers account for upwards of 25% of hot water use in your home, a low-flow shower head is a great choice for reducing water usage. You’ll drop from 3.5 gallons per minute to under two. Also ensure that leaks aren’t draining your wallet. Even a slow leak can waste over 100 gallons of water a year. Fix this by changing out the washer or O-ring.
