General State Information
Illinois is a Midwestern state which happens and was the 21st state admitted to the United States of America. Three U.S. Presidents have been elected while they were living in Illinois; Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Barack Obama. About 66% of the state’s population lives in the northeastern corner of the state. Although Springfield is the capital of the state, most of the residents live within the city of Chicago and its surrounding area. The neighboring states of Illinois include Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Indiana.
Climate
Illinois has a variety of different climates because of its position and length. Most of the state has humid conditions. The summers are hot and humid and the winters are cool to very cold. The state typically sees about 48 inches of rainfall a year. In the Chicago area the snowfall exceeds 38 inches a year. Thunderstorms are common in Illinois as well, with an average of 51 days of thunderstorm activity a year. This ranks Illinois above the national average. Tornadoes also occur in the state at a rate of about 35 per year.
Demographic
The estimated population of the state was almost 13,000,000 in 2008. This represents a 3.9% increase since 2000. Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show that 13.8% of the residents in Illinois are foreign-born, with 48% from Latin America, 25% from Asia and 23% from Europe. Chicago is located on the northern edge of the state which is our nation’s third largest city and as of 2000, 23% of the population lived in the city.
