Illinois has new energy codes that go into effect in April throughout the state. The codes are supposed to require well-insulated basements, thicker walls and energy-saving windows. Some builders have already started building homes to these standards, while others are waiting until the law goes into effect.
The changes are somewhat significant in many areas because insulation was never a requirement for basements before, and there were no specific standards for windows at all. Now, all basements must be insulated, and windows must have what’s known as low emissivity, which promotes energy efficiency, installed in homes, whether the homes are new or new additions or upgrades to a home.
The new codes also affect things such as lighting, air ducts, water heaters, and power systems throughout the house. Any builder found not adhering to these standards will face stiff fines and possible suspension of licenses to build homes.
