General State Information

Georgia is located on the southeastern coast of the United States and is bordered by Florida to the south, Alabama to the west, South Carolina to the east, Tennessee to the northwest and North Carolina to the northeast. The capital of Georgia is Atlanta. There are more than 9.5 million people living in Georgia, making it the ninth most populous state in America. Georgia has 18 counties that are among the top 100 fastest growing counties in the US. The top ten cities in Georgia are Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, Athens, Macon, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Albany and Johns Creek. The populations for these cities range between 62,049 (Johns Creek) and 498,109 (Atlanta) people.

In 2006, Georgia’s GSP (Gross State Product) was $380 billion making the state America’s 10th largest economy. Georgia’s industry is diverse, made up of tourism, transportation, communications and agriculture. Manufacturing of aircraft’s and cars are also major industries.

There are 70 public colleges and over 45 private institutions in the state of Georgia.

63 parks are located in Georgia, 48 of them have been deemed state parks and 15 are historic sites. There are also numerous wildlife preserves being watched over by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Some of the others are under the supervision of the National Park Service. Various museums are available for visitation, such as the High Museum of Art, Georgia Museum of Art, the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Oglethorpe University Museum of Art Morris Museum of Art and. Musical arts can be heard at places like the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; this is a very well-known Southeastern orchestra recognized for its large arts organization.

Climate

Georgia’s climate consists of mostly humid subtropical temperatures; the state has winters that have cold weather containing snow. The summers are hot and humid, except for in the elevated parts of the state, such as the North Georgia Mountains. The southern parts of Georgia, near the border of Florida, have more subtropical temperatures. The closer to the Gulf of Mexico, the warmer it is.
