Sometimes when you buy a house with multiple rooms, one or two rooms look really small, leaving you wondering what you can do with the room. Unless you want to spend a lot of money, you’re probably not going to be able to make a smaller room larger. But you can make it seem larger if you do some of these four steps.
1. Paint the room a bright color. Dark colors make people feel like they’re being closed in on. Bright colors make them seem like they’re in a happier place. Don’t go with traditional white because, well, it’s boring. Instead, light blue, yellow, orange or green would be a nice change of pace. If you decided to do the sponge technique and mix a couple of colors, even better.
2. Remove the closet door. You’re not going to get much storage into a small closet anyway, so maybe you can take the door off and put something in there for extra space. You instantly make the room seem bigger if you can pop the dresser or any other storage you have in the closet, and if it’s angled right think about putting your TV and stereo equipment in that space.
3. Put lighting in the corners of the room. Having small table lamps won’t get it done in a small room. Putting lighting in the corners, such as tall lamps, makes the room seem like it has some real spacing, as long as you’re not always sitting next to it.
4. Put a couple of mirrors in strategic places on the wall. Mirrors offer depth to every room, but only add a couple of mirrors to a small room to help change the perspective of it. Too many mirrors can get confusing. Small mirrors seem more like pictures and won’t get it done. A couple of longer mirrors that you put up either vertically or horizontally will work wonders with your mind.
