The state is bordered by Georgia and Alabama to the north. Florida is known as the Orange state because of the oranges it produces every year. The name Florida is Spanish for flowery Easter, which is referred to the Easter season. It was named by a Spanish sailor named Juan Ponce de Leon who landed on the state in 1513.

Florida is the fourth most populous state in America with a population of 18,251,243 people. Tallahassee is the capital of Florida; other top cities include Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Hialeah, Orlando, Ft Lauderdale, Cape Coral and Pembroke Pines.

There are 67 counties in the state of Florida; the most popular being Dade, Volusia, Seminole, Orange, Polk, Brevard, Flagler and Osceola. Most of the time, Florida has a climate that is tropical and humid. Warm temperatures are encountered during all four seasons of the year with occasional hurricanes, tornadoes and cold fronts during the winter. Florida’s Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, in 2006 was $713.5 million making the state the fourth largest economy in America. Most of the money comes from real estate and tourism.

Sports are a major part of the culture and economy in Florida. Some popular sports teams include the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat (basketball) and the Florida Gators, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins (football).

Some of the greatest attractions include zoos and national parks. Gatorland offers a place where residents and visitors can take a closer look at the life and habitation of alligators. Bush Gardens is known for its roller coasters, but also has a safari ride where you can get an up-close feel of the wild animals of Africa.
