Northern California

Northern California is home to the state capital—Sacramento; San Francisco Bay Area—San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland; and many more of California’s major cities—Berkley, Fresno, Fremont, Monterey, Modesto, Santa Cruz, Stockton, Yuba City, Napa, Oakland, Palo Alto, Redding, and Salinas. Each of these cities fall within one of Northern California’s 48 counties, and in 2000 the estimated population (according to Census reports) was over 13 million residents. Notable counties include Alameda (population 1.4 million), Contra Costa (population 950,000), Fresno (population 800,000), Sacramento (population 1.2 million), and Santa Clara (population 1.7 million).

Parts of Northern California are commonly referred to by their regions, the following make-up the most mentionable regions. Central Coast—an agriculturally rich area that attracts tourists; Central Valley—a 400 mile stretch of land that includes Sacramento Valley and Joaquin Valley; East Bay, North Bay and South Bay—all specific areas within the San Francisco Bay Area; Silicon Valley—located in the southern part of the Bay Area; Yosemite—home to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada Mountains; North Coast—where Santa Rosa, Eureka, and Crescent City are found; and Sacramento Valley—primarily agriculturally rich land and grasslands.

Economy in Northern California

Northern California first saw a massive increase in its population during the mid-1800s, during the California Gold Rush between 1848 and 1855. During this time an estimated 300,000 residents poured into the San Francisco area in search of gold, rumored to be littering the landscape. Since Northern California’s gold rush boom, through to today, the area has become host to much of the world’s economic, scientific, and cultural stages. Many of today’s leading Internet businesses were originally developed in Northern California, including Google, Yahoo!, and eBay. Northern California is also home to the widely renowned Silicon Valley, made famous during the dot-com boom, which still leads the way for many technological advances for information technologies and systems.

Educational institutions in Northern California are not only plentiful, but widely considered as some of the most prestigious schools and universities in the nation. UC Berkley, UC Davis, UC Merced, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Francisco make up five of University of California’s ten schools in California. There are also eleven California State University campuses in Northern California, which includes: California Maritime Academy, Chico State, California State University East Bay, California State University Monterey Bay, California State University Stanislaus, Fresno State, Humboldt State, Sacramento State, San Francisco State, San Jose State, Sonoma State. Northern California’s private educational institutions are well-known as being amongst some of the finest universities and colleges in the world. Select college students move to Northern California to attend Stanford University, the University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, St. Mary’s College, Mills College, or the University of the Pacific.

Recreation

State and national parks are plentiful in Northern California, which offer residents and visitors multiple recreational retreats. National parks—Yosemite, Kings Canyon-Sequoia, Redwood, Lassen Volcanic, and Death Valley—are all federally protected and are each diverse, in certain aspects, from the next. Many of these parks controlled by the United States National Park System are home to national monuments.
