Spending all that time on our decks can add considerable wear and tear top of our favorite gathering spots. If possible you should set aside some time before the winter weather gets too bad to take steps to protect your deck this winter. Here are a couple simple steps you can follow to keep your deck protected this winter and keep it looking great for all the gatherings and barbeques you plan on having for years to come.

Your going to want to thoroughly clean your deck to remove any dirt, mold, mildew, stains from barbequing or anything else that could do damage to or discolor your wood. Depending on what type of wood your deck is made of, there are products made to clean it. Acid and chorine-free, oxygen powdered powder concentrate cleaners are made specifically for pressure-treated wood decks and they are made environmentally friendly so they won’t damage plant life near your deck. There are cleaners that are formulated for all woods that will work on hardwoods like cedar, redwood and mahogany. They also work when you’re not sure what kind of wood your deck is made of. They won’t bleach or yellow your deck and they are easy to use. You just mix them with water, apply the mixture to your deck, scrub it in then rinse it off.

Once you have cleaned your deck thoroughly you’ll want to make sure you’ve added the proper sealing, staining and protection to make sure it looks good for years. First, it is very important to add a good water repellent, which you can find at any local hardware store. A sales person should be able to tell you which product will work best with you type of wood according to the region you live in. These water repellents often come in a variety of shades or clear which will give you options if you decide you want to change the look of you deck.
