Underdecking – Is it worth it?

DIY Underdecking

Underdecking serves to add value and increase your storage/living space for that typically unused space underneath your deck. For those DIY types, it is generally easy to install, but their are plenty of contractors that can get it done inexpensively for you. Most contractors will charge between $10 – $15 a square foot to install this for you. Typically, underdecking is cheaper if installed when the deck is first installed.

Besides beautifying the overall look of your home, underdecking functions as a basic covered patio. You now have an extra space under the deck where you can conduct family activities in any weather or even reserve the space for personal storage.

A good underdeck will not disrupt other ceiling panels such as lights or fans. The material should be able to withstand weather changes and water should be able to drain away from the underdeck to prevent puddles. In fact, there needs to be a good water flow system so that the area under the deck can be kept dry at all times. Due to the difference in deck construction, the roof should be able to easily modify to different deck designs and be easily cut according to simple measurements.

Don’t worry about a lack of color choices, underdecking comes in various colors and finishes (the most popular color is white). You can select the most appropriate roof according to the overall look and feel that you want to achieve for that space. Length of warranty and reliability of your new roof is your main concern when shopping around. You will want to be able to walk on your deck feeling secure. After successful installation, feel free to add lights and fans.

Common warranty issues for underdecking include leaks, warping, or inappropriate fitting or dents. Therefore, be sure to purchase from a company that has a few years of experience in adding underdecks under their belt. Remember, underdecking is an investment that will increase the value of your property as well as enhance the overall look of your home. Overall, I believe an underdeck is a worthwhile addition to your home.
