The Home Depot is the largest retailer of home improvement and construction products in the United States. The Home Depot operates 2,193 stores and employs over 331,000 people in seven countries, including all fifty states in the U.S., ten provinces in Canada, China, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam.
In June of 1978 the first two Home Depot locations opened in Atlanta, Georgia. Each location was around 60,000 square feet and stocked an unheard of 25,000 SKUs (stock keeping units) – unique identifiers of each distinct product.

The Home Depot Co-founders Bernie Marcus & Arthur Blank
Founders Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus wanted to create a company that gives back to the community while upholding specific values, including respect for one another and excellent customer service. When founded in 1978, Arthur Blank, Bernie Marcus, investment banker and co-founder Ken Langone, and co-founder Pat Farrah, The Home Depot set out to create the largest, most highly diversified product line, home-improvement retail store intended to meet the demand of local businesses and consumers.
The Home Depot Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in 2002 with the intent of furthering community building goals by supplying additional resources to assist affiliated nonprofit organizations. Building affordable housing is the ultimate goal of the foundation. Which is why to date, The Home Depot Foundation has granted $70 million to nonprofit organizations and supported the construction of an astonishing 50,000 homes.

The Home Depot Foundation
In addition to building affordable new houses, The Home Depot Foundation focuses on community relations by leading the way in improving the long-term welfare of each community it supports. The long-term building approach is designed to maintain healthy, eco-friendly communities where families want to live and thrive. This is in part accomplished through planting and restoring trees along streets and in schools, plus the foundation builds and refurbishes community parks and playgrounds.
The Home Depot corporate offices are located just outside of Atlanta, in Cobb County, Georgia, at their Atlanta Store Support Center. Today the average size of each store is 105,000 square feet, with an additional approximated 23,000 square feet of outdoor garden area. Home Depot stores continue to stock a larger selection of products and services than any other competitor, with over 40,000 products at the average location.
For the fiscal year ended February 2008, net sales were $77.3 billion and the company grossed $26 billion. For the fiscal year ended February 2008, The Home Depot netted $6 billion dollars less than the previous year at $71.3 billion, with a gross profit of $24 billion.

I have always like Home Depot. From the people I have talked to they treat their workers well which maybe is why they seem more friendly and knowledgeable in general. I never knew about the home depot foundation but that is pretty cool.
Jills last blog post..Home Sales increase from February, but down from March 2008
I have shopped at Home Depot for many years finding everything a home owner could need or want, I did not know about their foundation, thanks for sharing that and helping the people see its just not another corporation worrying about their bottom line.
I didnt know as well that they have a foundation. It’s a good thing that they are trying to give back.
It’s interesting that I find out about the Home Depot Foundation from a real estate web site.
Unfortunately, this is not the type of news and information that we get from the mainstream media. That’s why I like to read blog posts. Thanks for the information and the post.
I think the site looks good, it’s easy on the eyes, it’s nice and clean and easy to navigate.
cool very cool…..nice post.
Think how much more money Home Depot would have to do good deeds like this foundation if they hadn’t had to pay Bob Nardeli (I think the spelling is correct) over $200 million in severance pay for running the company into the ground during his tenure. Yes it’s the same Bob Nardeli that is now the CEO of Chrysler who just filed for bankruptcy protection. He certainly is generating an interesting resume.

Its funny how these guys who fail at everything they touch still manage to land on their feet. Sounds like one of our former governors. He ran Nevada Power into the ground, make such bad investments we’re still paying for them through higher utility rates and he got elected to run the state…which is now facing huge budget shortfalls from the prior administration.
Charless last blog post..Hope for Distressed Homeowners
The Home Depot has had a great impact on metro Atlanta. We’ve sold many house to and for Home Depot employees. By the way, Arthur Blank is also the owner of the Atlanta Falcons.

Did not know about the foundation either – proud to be a customer there now. 50,000 homes is truly an amazing contribution. Kudos to Home Depot!

I really like the sounds of the Home Depot Foundation. I like charitable organizations that give back to the community.. 50,000 homes is a huge impact!
Home Depot has done a great deal of charitable work in our area (Colorado). Their foundation is worth looking into. Check out their website if you get a chance. It’s in the blog post.
Well it work really good for those real estate owners who wants to sell more and more houses and Home depot is the best option for it.
Hi,

Thanks.
I am glad to see a big company like Home Depot doing great community work that the Home Depot Foundation provides.
Big businesses often get negative publicity in the media so it is good to see the Home Depot doing great work that benefits the community.
Home depot is great, but they have recently been the target of some criticism for hiring cheap foreign labor.
The foundation really makes an impact on the local community. I think this draws more support for the big stores over the mom and pop stores for sure.
I just want to thank you, your people at the Schenectady, New York store helped me pick the right paint for the job. I am redoing second floor of the firehouse. I did two fireman cross`s with the inside picture`s of three firefighter`s raising the flag from the world trade center disaster. Plus other`s picture`s along our wall I will send pictures to show you. Thank you John Bailey and Scott Gruendle! I STILL HAVE MORE TO DO
