It seems that Florida is on the right track when it comes to going green. They seem to be putting a good effort to save the resources from our planet. California is starting to make way as well.

In New Zealand we always have a lot of news and pressure in the media about maintaining a Green image. What many people fail to see however is that it is very expensive in many cases to achieve this. Definitely worth the struggle however in my opinion.

I also agree with Doug. Where I live we get some pretty crazy bush / scrub fires each year and planting your lawn with local vegetation is a great idea. Atleast you know it is going to grow well in your local weather too

Doug, I totally agree with your comments. Many of these builders are promoting such ways in order to profit some way. However, there are builders as well as consumers who are in it to save our planet for future generations.

Let’s be completely honest here, how many of these builders and contractors would be going green if there wasn’t a substantial amount of money to be made? Everyone likes to pat themselves on the back while enjoy a refreshing dip in the greenwash, but will the effects be lasting? I’m not saying we shouldn’t or that it’s a bad thing to be eco-conscious, even if it is just for the money. My point is that all this false sincerity might get us into worse trouble down the line, when the thrill of the green fad fades away and we find ourselves saying, ‘Environment? That is SO last decade.’

I’d like to give an enthusiastic two thumbs up for the invocation to plant your lawn with local vegetation! The amount of ecological damage done each year by the misguided desire to give every home a matching perfect green lawn is staggering. The amounts of fertilizer consumed alone is nearly equal to what is used in commercial farming. Not only do local plants thrive with little care they are also more unique and aesthetically pleasing.

I just moved into a brand new home that is about 50% green. Most of the materials used in the construction are recycled and will not harm the environment.

I think it’s great that many people have are moving towards more energy awareness. I know I try to do my part around my house to help with cutting enery costs. This summer I installed enery star thermostats which really helped with my electric bill.

I think alot of people now have become aware of the whole green movement. Even at my job we have weekly tips on how to save energy and be more efficient. As more consumers start to take action we can really cut back on our costs and waste.

Steve, I have seen the same green awareness in my neck of wood. People have begun to take this seriously now. I visited a few new homes in my neighborhood and they were was so energy efficient. The builders seem to have shifted in that direction as well.
