California’s Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the head of Edison International, Ted Craver, “flipped the switch” on a project that will provide solar power to as many as 1,300 homes in the Southern California region. Monday marked the completion of a project that placed 33,700 thin film solar panels atop a large 600,000 square foot warehouse in Fontana, California.
The Southern California project is the first of 150 similar projects that California has planned in an effort to reduce the state’s greenhouse-gas emissions over the next several years; the proposed price tag of all 150 projects is currently at $875 million. Also on Monday, Edison announced that their next solar panel installation project would be atop a 458,000 square foot building in Chino, California. A Tempe, Arizona company, First Solar, supplied the Fontana solar panels and will supply the solar panels for the project in Chino.
California has been setting an example for the rest of the nation for a few years; home builders in the state have already started building green homes and new home communities, and San Diego County has been working to conserve water for years. I hope that these green efforts in California are successful and help push other states towards similar actions.

That’s a great contribution in stopping green gasses. I think rest world must follow the solar energy system and recommend it. That similar action can save us from green house effect.
It’d be great if the DC area added something like that too.

I think this is great, especially for a location such as So Cal. I just hope that the recent drop in oil doesn’t discourage the growth of alternative energy investment.

@ Helena – definitely is great that the use of solar panels is picking up. Now, they just need to find places to put them. I read last night that one major problem is that panels take up a lot of space – probably why the roof tops are key.
@ Dave – unfortunately that’s what usually happens.
This morning I heard on the news that Philadelphia had intalled some solar panels on top of one of the corrections facilities. Michael Nutter(love the name…he is such a Nutter..lol) (sorry, I amuse myself)has a goal to make Philly a top Green City that is dedicated to “urban sustainability“.
Lots of action like Philly and California are making will eventually have a positive affect. Kudos to Arnold.
There is so much solar potential in the southern states especially California. It’s a shame it isn’t utilised to a greater degree.
Wow! Man I am so proud to be an American right now. GO TERMINATOR! Now imagine if we had spent all the money we spent on Iraq on Solar Tech?
Heck, when Carter was president Solar tech was cheaper than it is now.. because it was being mass produced.
Once the production line gets going on solar cells, and it benefits from economy of scale.. we might see these types of projects cost less and less even for single homeowners.
Lets go democrats! Lets go liberals! We’ve got a country to save!
Typically Nevada takes its cues from California. Given the huge amount of sunshine our state receives (300 + days a year), solar power is really a no brainer. There is a large solar power plant outside of Boulder City already and Nellis Airforce base just completed a huge solar project earlier this year. There have been a few green communities spring up here and there and one entirely solar neighborhood in Henderson. Despite gas going back down, I think people will stay in “save” mode for quite a while longer. These type of projects make sense on so many levels that I hope we’ll see this as the next big growth industry.

This is great news for CA to lead the way on doing more solar in the upcoming years. Here in Gainesville, we just passed a Feed In Tarrif so that you get more incentives based on how effective your solar installation is on your home. We’re moving forward to make sure we find more ways to get alternative energy in the home.
Way to go California! California is showing innovation not just in green technologies, but also green policies and innovative way of bringing green energy to markets. One example is Solarcity which allows residents to lease solar equipment for around $100/month rather than paying $30-$50,000 upfront to install solar equipment. Hopefully, with Barack Obama’s new administration green technologies will get a much needed push at federal and national level rather than piecemeal efforts by individuals and states.

Solar power and green power are very important these days. Making you house green and be easy and cheap.
It looks like Obama will be investing big in Green technology such as wind and solar as part of his economy recovery plan.
wow, I wish the uk thought like this, over here in the UK, we are way behind the US and most of Europe in our ‘green’ thinking

My company now does complete energy audits using infrared cameras and blower doors to detect energy loss. Not only is it complete green building diagnostics but it is also a major energy saver
It will be interesting to see the development of this, in particular how the UK respond to it. We could do with some more green energy!
Green energy is a big topic in europe. Hopefully other countries will understand the importance of alternate energy sooner than later.
Note that Cali is also one of the few states which provides a feed-in tariff, allowing you to sell your solar power to the grid at way above-market prices.
Southern California Edison is set to hit a milestone today in its plans to install two square miles of solar panels in California — the completion of the largest rooftop solar installation in the state. Details on the size of the installation have not yet been released, but Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to hold a news conference this morning.build your own solar panels
I’m got Solar panels for Home ,Im glad I’m making something for our planet too. It’s good to work green, and it also saves some money.
