Homebuyers at Shea Homes’ Victoria Gardens, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, will receive free solar power systems through August 31. The nationwide homebuilder is working with BP Solar, a global leader in solar energy, as part of their ongoing commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all Shea Homes Active Lifestyle Communities.
“By providing our buyers with free solar energy systems, we’re taking efficient energy use a step further by actually creating energy,” stated Jeff Gersh, Area Vice President of Victoria Gardens. “This provides both short-term and long-term benefits for our customers in the form of significant cost savings, and it also makes a positive impact on the environment.”
Victoria Gardens’ homes are already Shea Green Certified; however, with the BP Solar Home Solutions systems, electric bills are estimated to be reduced by up to 60 percent. In addition, the 3-kilowatt solar power system offers residents security against utility rate hikes and allows the homeowner to track how much power their system is producing.
“With the addition of solar in a home, we’re no longer just efficient users of electricity, we become producers. Integrating a solar system into a home during construction makes it more accessible and affordable than it’s ever been. Victoria Gardens’ homes pass the true test of a ‘green’ home by integrating a mix of energy-saving and energy-generating devices that deliver immediate and long-term benefits for our customer.”
The good news is that new homebuyers in Shea Active Lifestyle Communities in California, Arizona, Florida, and Washington will also receive free solar system upgrades through August 31. After August 31, homebuyers can add the solar system as an upgrade option to their home.

That is really great. I wish my house faced south. The way my house faces we do not have a good angle for solar panels and here in New Jersey you really need that to make the panels worth it. Nice article.
Thanks James. I think this is a really great offer from Shea too. I believe that we’ll see a lot more homebuilders willing to go the extra mile as the demand for ‘green’ homes continues to grow.
I can imagine that in areas that don’t receive 300+ days of sunshine, unlike Nevada, Arizona, Florida, etc., the angles that the sun hits the panels is pretty crucial for gaining the optimal benefits.

going green is all the rage. if you are a developer, you have LOTS of new incentives (read tax breaks) for implementing environmentally friendly housing.
60 percent is a lot. The solar panels look like they will pay off in the long run. I’ve been thinking about getting them installed in my house but I’ve been on the fence about it. Hopefully I can make up my mind real soon.

I would love to have solar panels on my house. I have thought about doing the solar shingles but the prices havn’t gotten to a point that it really makes financial sense to lay out the money.

Solar power is a great idea if you have the weather. Here in London we have 6 months of winter and 6 months of cloud and rain.
Green is the way to go, but I wonder how long it takes to pay for itself

I have always wondered what are the obstacles for solar energy to enter more in general usage. Recently I have learnt of some alternative use of shallow water pools covered with transparent plastics or foils that accumulates heat over the year and reduces even more electricity bills.
There are a bunch of a similar idea. If only someone clever knows how to bring it to the market…

It’s worth it saving our nature. I just can’t understand, why the hardware for solar energy is still so expensive. Offering this technique in mass production for private users for a affordable price would be the right way.
As I see, one of the biggest polluters in now trying to pimp its image… Good work! More energy companies should think about how to keep our nature alive for our kids…
I have property in FLA that we are actually bidding on solars. Primarily I am in NJ and in an urban market where the buildings skew my ability to go solar. Love the concept though to cleaner energy. Nice job to whoever does go thru with this

I posted this in another article on this site, but generally speaking via the energy star program the DOE will pay for upwards of 50% of a solar power system installation. Shea is being smart with this and taking advantage of the energy savings for the future home owner and also getting 50% of the cost of the system reimbursed through the DOE

With the economy in a rut, I’m sure none of us would mind that reduction of electric bills by 60%. Solar powers are a great way to go, but I wonder why the U.S. hasn’t already switched? Obviously it’ll save us money so we can spend more on other junk.

Solar technology is going to be the way of the future. Solar power, energy efficient windows and other energy saving home improvements will become the norm. With all of the federal energy tax credits – there’s no reason not to do your part in reducing our energy demands.
