Identity and credit misuse is one of the nation’s leading crimes with $53 billion dollars in fraud reported last year from victims of identity theft. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, internet fraud increased 33% in 2008 to an all-time high. A few months ago a friend of mine had her purse stolen right out of her apartment when she was in the shower! The thief walked in the front door and took the purse right off her kitchen table. Frightened, she called the police to file a report but there wasn’t much the police were able to do for her. The police officers suggested she contact her bank, credit card companies, and told her to expect a packet in the mail with information on additional remediation steps. After calls to her bank and credit card companies she realized her exposure to identity theft was far more important that this monetary loss. The thief had her driver’s license and social security number which could be used years down the road to gain employment or pursue new accounts in her name. There are almost 9 million Americans blindsided by the devastation of identity theft every year and the experience is extremely disruptive at home and work.

Identity theft is a not a must have but it definitely helps to have it.
There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.
I had looked everywhere for this article – something that I would do exactly what it said, without all the fuss and hassle. I had already wasted hours of time and who knows how much time on other blogs, so I have to thank you for this article. Thanks!
I don’t think Identity Protection is necessary. I mean with all the social networks available for everybody online, having your identity being protected is almost impossible. Facebook, Friendster, MySpace et al. They make it all seems that everybody’s profile is for public. My two cents worth. Anyways, nice post here.
what’s the fuzz with identity theft? people keep on uploading their private pics on social networking sites and getting pissed if someone stole it? make sense to me…
