Shea Homes – Largest Privately Owned Home Builder in the United States Remains Strong

John F. Shea Family of Companies

John F. Shea started a small Portland, Oregon based plumbing business in 1881; over the years, that small family business has grown into the largest privately owned home builder in the United States. The John F. Shea Family of Companies consists of Shea Homes, Trilogy, Shea Mortgage, Shea Properties, Venture Capital, John F. Shea Construction, Inc., Redding and Reed Manufacturing. Today, Shea Homes is one of a few nationally recognized home builders that cannot be found on The Home Builder Implode-Meter which lists home builders that are not faring financially well during this recession - yes, I said it, recession.

That is a great story of a family owned business. That is the type of story that gives you inspiration to keep going with your own business so you can pass it on to your family.

I think a lot of builders are going to have to the green route to stay competitive. Regardless of whether you are environmentally conscious or not, why wouldn’t you want a home that would cost you substantially less in utilities without giving up any luxury?

Shea has been a strong builder as long as I can remember. I think it’s fantastic they have not made the Builder Implode list and I hope they never do. It’s rare that a family owned business stays so strong for so long. Their ‘Green’ direction, in my opinion, shows forward and responsible business practices. Maybe that’s why they are as solid as they are.
