In midst of a housing slowdown reporting low sales, low profits and high inventory levels, home builders are looking for a way to sell homes. In nearly every market across the nation homes aren’t selling as buyers wait for lower interest rates and better deals, or maybe some of them are just waiting for the right home? The real estate market in San Jose, California isn’t immune to the many dilemmas of today’s real estate market, but for 7 environmentally conscious home buyers, it’s the right time to buy.
Realtytimes.com reported that local San Jose home builder, Pinn Brothers, recently released 9 of 51 environmentally friendly homes in Orchard Heights. These new homes are integrated with solar panels that generate 60% of the energy needed to power the home; the homes are also “green friendly” in their design and in the materials used to build them. Pinn Brothers sold 7 of the 9 $1 million homes the same day they were released.
Building a solar roof integrated home cost Pinn Brothers about $25,000 more but the builder was able to make up the difference from incentives offered by the state’s energy commission and local power utility. In Orchard Heights, homebuyers are able to purchase greener homes for the same price as traditional, less efficient homes. This may open the door for a new generation of homes and might be what some homebuyers are waiting for.

I have to agree on this. I think that these types of homes are what people want. I certainly do. If I could have a home that powers 60% of what I use, then I would be lovin’ life. Even if the cost is a bit higher, think of all the good that comes from it.
I definitely agree Josh. I think there is a large market out there waiting for these homes.
I think a lot of us would feel better if we used less energy.
Everyone is thinking green with the rise of oil costs. It makes complete sense for this to spill over into their homes as well. If that is what will sell, then builders need to be providing this product.
It can only be a good thing for the environment and well being the more these types of developments are publicized the better!
