As one of the largest home builders in Florida, Lennar Corp. now faces a class action lawsuit over defective Chinese drywall used to construct homes in the area. The lawsuit was disclosed by Lennar in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yesterday.
The class action lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The plaintiffs claim that they bought two homes built by Lennar and constructed with defective drywall imported from China, which the plaintiffs claim emits fumes and sulfur gases.
Lennar Corp. was one of the first major home builders to acknowledge the defective Chinese drywall issue, and has been using reserves to cover the estimated cost of replacing damaged homes’ drywall and other damaged materials. Additional costs above the reserved funds will be covered by insurance, according to the Associated Press.
Lennar is not alone in the use of defective drywall to construct new homes in Florida. In fact, several builders including Taylor Morrison, Meritage Homes, WCI, Ryland Homes, Standard Pacific Homes, and Transeastern have used Chinese drywall.
Early estimates suggested that enough drywall was imported to construct over 65,000 homes, other reports suggest that it may be closer to 100,000 homes. To date, the Florida Health Department has received 265 complaints. Other states that have reported issues with Chinese drywall include Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia.

There is no question that Chinese products are crap. The funny part about products manufactured in China is that the “best stuff” in China is exported to foreign countries and they keep the worst stuff for the Chinese local market. If you think Chinese crap is bad in America, it is even worse in China!!
Sometimes you buy new phones that work for a week, toilet seats that break in a month, pants that rip after the second time you have worn them.
I am an American living in China, but I buy most of my stuff at home for triple the price so that the things I will buy will last for more than a week.
I’ve heard many, many bad things about Chinese drywall so I’d stay away definitely. The lawsuits are now starting to popup.
