Being in the UK where we don’t get much hot weather I wasn’t really aware how different colour roofs affected heating bills etc. Very informative.

If you live in the South you already know about how hot a car's interior can get on a real hot day. If you think about it, your shingles are in the direct sunlight most of the time. A white roof will defintely lower your cooling costs. We live in Florida and just re-roofed our home using a special coating (expands & contracts) — it’s white. We slowly redid the roof on weekends — its original roof was tar and pebbles. As soon as we had 1/2 of the roof done, we noticed our air conditioning was not coming on as often.
