Vinyl and wood floors look great when you first install them, but after time they tend to lose their luster. Here are some ways to not only make your floors shine, but also protect them from daily wear and tear.
When dealing with vinyl floors you will want to try a floor polish. One market brand that works well is Armstong’s Shinekeepers; approximately $12 for 32 ounces at your local home center.
For wood floors that are urethane finished you will want to use a no wax topcoat; Bruce’s Fresh Finish approximately $12 for 32 ounces.
If your hardwood floors have a wax finish using a “Top Coating” will not work. If you are not sure if you have a wax coating on your floor, check with a drop of water. If the water droplet leaves a white spot there is a good chance that your floors do in fat have a wax coating.
To apply Both Armstrong’s Shinekeepers and Bruce’s Fresh Finish use a new sponge mop. Keep your application area to 3 or 4 board widths. This will allow you to treat the entire length of the boards preventing lap marks.
Vinyl floors after time have a tendency to peel up at the seams. To repair this issue, be sure to clean the area thoroughly where the peeling has occurred. Vacuum beneath the tile best you can. Apply a thin amount of sheet goods adhesive ($4.00 per quart) with a putty knife directly to the sub flor. If the tile curls back away from the sub floor, use a hair dryer to soften the tile. Once softened, place a weighted object on the repaired tile for the recommend drying time as described on the adhesive direction for use. An additional measure of protection for your newly repaired tile is to protect the seam with a seam coating kit (approximately $10.00 at our local home center).
