There are so many furnace filters to choose from these days that making the right choice can be a daunting task. Here is some helpful information to arm yourself with, when making your next furnace filter purchase.
Most furnace filters come with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating. The scale ranges from 1 to 16 and generally home filters range from 4 to 12 on the MERV scale. It is important to follow your furnace manufactures recommendations. These are two areas of interest that apply to all filters. One is the amount of airflow and the other is the amount of particulates that the filter can capture. Be sure that your choice of a new filter meets or exceeds the manufactures recommendations.
A good choice for most homeowners is a pleated filter with a MERV of 7 or 8. This rating will trap 80 to 90 percent of particles 5 microns or larger, which is plenty of filtration for almost all homes.
If you or your family members require the maximum amount of filtration due to allergies, or breathing conditions a MERV rating of 11 to 16 is the best choice. Keep in mind that the higher the MERV rating the more particles the filter will capture, however your blower motor is going to have to work harder to force air through the filter. This will cause additional strain on your blower motor and increase your electric bill.
It is important that before you switch to a high efficiency filter from a fiberglass pleated filter that you check with your HVAC technician. Your technician may be able to increase your blower’s air speed to compensate for the level of reduced air flow caused by higher rated filters.
Finally be sure to check your filters every month, especially after dust storms. Phoenix new homes need this more often in June and July during the monsoon season. This will ensure the highest possible air quality in your home and reduce your energy bills.
