Buying Furniture on a budget

OldNewFurnitureWhether you just finished having your home built or are moving into a new home you will need to furnish or refurnish the new living space. After spending a good amount of money on your new home you might think you just can’t afford to furnish for your home. However, not having the funds to purchase designer furniture shouldn’t keep you from making your home feel complete with some new digs.

Here are some ideas on where to find furniture for those of you on a budget:

Check the local thrift stores and consignment shops for bargains on furniture. They often have treasures you wouldn’t expect to find. You must keep in mind that the items at theses stores move in and out very often. So if you find something that you like, try and purchase it as quickly as possible. If you don’t, there is a good chance it will be gone the next time you go back.

Keep an eye open for advertisements to local furniture stores. They often have clearance sales advertised on television and in the papers. You could even stop in a local shop and see if there are any discounts on discontinued or outdated furniture which can also help keep some money in your wallet.

Always keep an eye out for yard sales in your neighborhood. Many homeowners that are having yard or moving sales will place them in local newspaper classifieds or put up signs around the neighborhoods.

Often furniture stores have areas somewhere in the store where they keep furniture with irregularities or slight defects. These defects or imperfections are often just a scratch, dent or discoloration. If you can live with having a piece of furniture in your home with a slight imperfection, you can get these pieces at bargain prices by haggling with the sales staff or store managers.

If you have the skills to do so, you can re-upholster, stain, paint or improve in any other way your existing furniture. Just adding a slipcover, a coat of paint or some new fabric can bring old furniture new life.
Never forget to ask family and friends. Family and friends often have furniture they would not mind giving you if you just ask. Many people have old furniture sitting in their garage or storage.
