Since investing in this housing market is not an option for most of us, we’ve decided to settle in to our own homes, for the most part. Therefore, it’ll be nice to enhance our living environments and make them more comfortable. Following are a few tips to improve your home this fall, and do so on a budget:
If your home needs some remodeling, you may be able to get more done for less.
1. Look for discounts. If you plan to redo the kitchen cabinets or replace a toilet, Habitat for Humanity Restores and Stardust Building Supplies are a couple of places you can find a deal on building materials that have been donated and are now being resold at more than thirty percent off of retail.
2. Try holiday sales. Time-of-year sales are great for picking up new furniture or appliances. New recliners and chairs can usually be found on Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends. The ideal recliner should go on sale just before the Super Bowl.
3. Do it yourself. Obviously, hiring someone to do any type of work around your house is going to cost you. Why not install that ceiling fan yourself? Some building supply stores offer workshops in tiling, installing toilets, and interior wall paint preparation.
4. Save on appliances with imperfections. A washer, dryer, or refrigerator with a scratch or dent will function just as it should at big saving to you. In many cases, you’ll simply have to refinish the item or hide the flaw from view.
5. Repaint. When you budget won’t allow for making any major changes to a room, at least repaint it. Paint is relatively inexpensive and adds drama to any space, even if you can only do one wall or just paint some pieces of furniture in your room.
6. Do more with what you have. You can arrange decorative items in a different way and move furniture to change the look of a room. You’ll be surprised at the changes you can make and the life you can add with what you’ve got.
